.NET Developer working across multiple screens

Are you wondering whether a job as a .NET developer could be the right choice for you? The following guide will tell you everything you need to know.

Pronounced dot net, .NET is a system framework that provides programming guidelines. It’s highly versatile and allows developers to create a wide number of different web applications. Indeed, the framework operates with numerous programming languages.

As a .NET Developer, you’re going to be responsible for tailoring, designing and developing software applications. These are going to be based on the individual requirements of a company. As well as software development .NET Developers are also responsible for providing continuous support for existing systems.

But is it the right choice for you? Well, this depends on whether you have the right skills. If you’re leaving school and you are already interested in how software is built and operates then you’re already on the right track here.

Skills And Qualifications You Need To Become A .NET Developer

When you look at job descriptions for a  .NET Developer, you’re probably going to see a lot of requirements that don’t make sense right now. Jobs added often include references to libraries and net, stack, knowledge of net language and experience with an SQL server. While all of this is important, these are things that you’re going to learn through on-hand experience and qualifications

For now, think about whether you are creative and flexible. As a .NET Developer, you need to be ready to learn new things while often working independently. It’s also beneficial to have a theoretical-abstract mindset. That last point is particularly important. It will allow developers to create brand new software that companies can use and benefit from. A keen interest in computer science is also recommended.

Most companies will expect you to have a degree in computer science, software programming or design. The qualification you choose is going to be tied to whether you want to go into something like web development or become a software engineer. There are lots of different career paths here. Some businesses are also going to accept Microsoft certification and you’ll see this mentioned on a .Net developer job description. The Microsoft Certified Professional Developer certification is the best option here.

The good news is that you won’t need previous experience as long as you have the right qualification. Although, for a higher position some companies will require a couple of years of experience underneath your belt.

A Typical Day As A .NET Developer

Once you have gained the right qualifications, it will be time to start working as a .NET developer with a company.

So, what will your day look like? Well, it largely depends. You might be wondering whether you’ll be working from home. A lot of .NET developers do operate remotely using Visual Studio and ASP.NET MVC as well as other tools on a typical Macbook.

Other .NET developers operate from an office with a larger team. You might choose a position based on whether you’re comfortable working independently.

If you’re working in the office you’ll come in about 8am in the morning, switch on the computer and start writing code. Don’t worry, there’ll also be time to chat with your colleagues and you’ll need to keep up with contacts too. There will be a lot to discuss with people beyond .Net language including bugs and design.

It’s worth pointing out that you probably won’t be working on one project but several projects at the same time. This means that you’ll need to remember where you are in coding for each task and you might even be switching between different programming languages.

One of the best parts of being a .NET developer is that you do have a flexible day. This means that you can choose when you break and when you work as long as you stick to the right number of hours. This is even more true if you’re working from home and your day will usually end at around 6:30pm.

Career Development

There are different levels that you can work in as a .NET Developer. You’ll likely start at intern status before moving up the ranks as you learn more about applications development and the net framework. At first, you will be working as part of a team, helping senior coders but you’ll quickly learn to operate independently.

In terms of where you can go in your career, the possibilities are nearly endless. Businesses in various different industries need the support of .NET Developers to create fresh applications that they can use. So you can easily switch between different sectors and businesses.
